RO vs Alkaline Water vs Copper: Which Is Better?

By Sanchit Jain, RO technician and owner of Sanchit Enterprises, Roorkee (since 2014). Updated October 2026.

RO vs alkaline water is not really an either-or choice. RO is the purification step that removes dissolved salts and contaminants. An alkaline stage is usually added after RO to put some minerals back and raise the pH. A copper stage does something similar with a small amount of copper. So the real question is whether you want plain RO water or RO water with an alkaline or copper stage.

We sell and service all three types, including our own alkaline purifiers, so here is a balanced view.

RO vs alkaline water vs copper explained by Sanchit Enterprises
Alkaline and copper are stages added to RO, not replacements for it.

RO vs alkaline water vs copper: what each does

  • RO: removes most dissolved salts, hardness and many heavy metals. Output water is low in minerals and often slightly below pH 7.
  • RO + alkaline: RO water passes through a mineral cartridge that adds minerals such as calcium and magnesium and raises the pH, usually into the slightly alkaline range.
  • RO + copper: RO water picks up a small amount of copper from a copper stage or tank, similar to the old practice of storing water in copper vessels.

All three start with the same RO purification, so all three give safe water when serviced properly.

What the evidence says about alkaline water

Many health claims are made for alkaline water. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is not enough research to support most of them, and for most people plain water is just as good for staying hydrated.

So choose an alkaline purifier if you prefer the taste, which many people find smoother, and not because of promised cures. Be wary of any seller who claims alkaline water treats disease.

Why do Japanese drink alkaline water?

Alkaline water ionizers became popular in Japan decades ago. There, alkaline ionized water apparatus are regulated as home medical devices, with approval for limited uses such as easing some gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the Alkaline Ionized Water Apparatus Association. That is a narrow, specific approval, not proof of wider health benefits.

Who should not drink alkaline water without advice?

If you have kidney disease, a heart condition, or take medicines that affect your kidneys or mineral levels, ask your doctor before switching to alkaline or mineral-added water. This is general guidance, not medical advice.

For everyone else, water with a pH within the Indian drinking water range of 6.5 to 8.5 set by BIS IS 10500 is suitable for daily drinking.

Copper or alkaline RO: which is better?

Both are fine choices on a good RO. Copper suits people who like the traditional idea of copper-stored water. Alkaline suits people who want the water to taste less flat. Either stage needs replacing when exhausted, which adds to running cost. Copper levels must stay within the BIS limit, so buy a known model and get it serviced on time.

Which water is high in alkaline? Natural spring and mineral waters often are, and RO water with an alkaline cartridge is too. Plain RO water usually is not.

RO vs alkaline water: our advice

In the RO vs alkaline water debate, the most important step is the RO itself, set for your water and serviced on time. Add an alkaline or copper stage if you like the taste, and do not pay extra for health promises. We test your water free and show you all three types. See water purifier dealer in Roorkee.
