Can You Reduce TDS Without RO? What Works and What Does Not

By Sanchit Jain, RO technician and owner of Sanchit Enterprises, Roorkee (since 2014). Updated October 2026.

You can reduce TDS without RO, but only a few methods really work at home: distillation, nanofiltration, deionisation, or blending your water with a lower-TDS source such as harvested rainwater. Boiling, UV purifiers, carbon filters, alum and water softeners do not lower TDS in any useful way.

Here is what each method does, and when an RO is still the sensible choice.

Reduce TDS without RO: methods explained by Sanchit Enterprises
Only a few methods actually lower dissolved solids. Most popular tricks do not.

Methods that do reduce TDS without RO

  • Distillation: boils water and condenses the steam, leaving almost all dissolved solids behind. Effective but slow and uses a lot of electricity.
  • Nanofiltration (NF): a looser membrane than RO. It lowers TDS partly, keeps more minerals and wastes less water. Suits moderately hard water.
  • Deionisation (DI): ion-exchange resins remove dissolved ions. Used for labs and batteries, but costly and not ideal for home drinking water.

And one practical option many homes forget:

  • Blending or switching source: mixing with harvested rainwater or a lower-TDS municipal supply brings the overall TDS down.

Methods that do not reduce TDS

  • Boiling: kills germs and removes some temporary hardness, but dissolved salts stay. As water evaporates, TDS can even rise slightly.
  • UV and UF purifiers: kill or remove germs and particles, not dissolved salts.
  • Carbon and gravity filters: improve taste and smell, not TDS.
  • Water softeners: swap calcium and magnesium for sodium. Hardness drops, TDS stays about the same.
  • Alum and clay pots: settle mud and particles, not dissolved salts.

When do you actually need to reduce TDS?

Check your water first. India’s drinking water standard, BIS IS 10500, sets 500 mg/L as the acceptable limit for dissolved solids. If your water is below that and tastes fine, you may not need to reduce TDS at all, only to make it germ-free with UV or UF.

Around Roorkee we often find borewell water above that limit, which is where RO earns its place.

What is better than RO water?

For low-TDS water, a UV+UF purifier is better than RO: it keeps the natural minerals and wastes no water. For high-TDS water, nothing practical beats a well-set RO with a TDS controller or mineral stage. The water you get from any purifier depends more on correct setup and service than on the technology name.

Our advice on how to reduce TDS without RO

If you want to reduce TDS without RO, start by measuring it. Then consider nanofiltration for moderately hard water, or blending with rainwater if you harvest it. If your TDS is high and you want simple, reliable drinking water, an RO is still the easiest answer. We test your water free in Roorkee before recommending anything.

Reduce TDS without RO: frequently asked questions

Does boiling reduce TDS?

No. Boiling kills germs, but dissolved salts remain, and TDS can rise slightly as water evaporates.

Can a UV purifier reduce TDS?

No. UV only kills germs. It does not remove dissolved salts.

Is nanofiltration better than RO?

It removes fewer salts but keeps more minerals and wastes less water. It suits moderately hard water.

How do I check my water TDS?
