RO less water in winter is one of the most common complaints we hear in Roorkee, and the cold is usually the reason. An RO membrane lets water through more slowly when the water is cold, so the same purifier that filled its tank quickly in June can take noticeably longer in December and January. A moderate slowdown is normal. A purifier that stops completely, or drops to a trickle, has a fault that needs fixing.
Here is how to tell whether your RO less water in winter problem is normal or needs a technician.

Why cold water means RO less water in winter
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a very fine membrane. Cold water is thicker, or more viscous, so less of it passes through in the same time. Membrane makers rate their output at about 25 °C, and output falls by a few percent for every degree colder.
On a cold Roorkee morning, tap water from an overhead tank can be well below that, so it is common for an RO to fill its tank a quarter to a third more slowly than in summer.
So if you notice RO less water in winter but the tank still fills, the purifier is usually healthy.
RO less water in winter: normal slowdown or a real fault?
Normal: the tank still fills fully, just more slowly, and the water tastes the same.
A fault: the RO does not fill its tank at all, gives only drops, the pump runs without stopping, or the taste has changed. Those point to a choked filter, a scaled membrane, a weak pump or a power supply fault. See RO not giving water for the usual causes.

5 reasons your RO gives less water in winter
- Cold water slows the membrane, as explained above.
- Lower supply pressure in winter mornings when everyone draws water at once.
- A sediment pre-filter choked with silt left over from the monsoon.
Two more causes that need a technician:
- A membrane scaled by hard water, which winter simply makes more obvious.
- A pump weakened by voltage drops, which are common in winter evenings.
Simple fixes for RO less water in winter
- Let the purifier refill overnight so the tank is full in the morning.
- Do not switch the purifier off at night; give it time to fill.
- Change a choked pre-filter. It is cheap and makes a big difference.
- Fit a stabiliser if your area has frequent voltage drops.
These steps fix most cases of RO less water in winter. Never run hot water into an RO to speed it up. Most home purifiers are not built for hot water and it can damage the membrane and fittings.
If flow is still poor, a winter service checks the pre-filter, membrane and pump together. See RO service in Roorkee.
When to book a visit
Book a visit if your RO gives less water in winter and the tank never fills, the pump runs constantly, or the taste changes. A TDS and flow test tells us within minutes whether the membrane or a filter is the cause. Your drinking water should stay within the BIS IS 10500 limits whatever the season.
RO less water in winter: frequently asked questions
Is it normal for RO output to drop in winter?
Yes, a moderate drop is normal because cold water passes through the membrane more slowly. A purifier that stops completely has a fault.
Can I use warm water in my RO?
No. Most home RO purifiers are not designed for hot water, and it can damage the membrane.
Should I change the membrane in winter?
Only if a TDS and flow test shows it is worn. Cold alone is not a reason to replace it.
Do you service ROs in Roorkee in winter?
Yes, every day, usually the same day.
