RO Water Tastes Salty or Bitter? Causes and Fixes

By Sanchit Jain, RO technician and owner of Sanchit Enterprises, Roorkee (since 2014). Updated October 2026.

RO water tastes salty when dissolved salts are getting past the purifier. That usually means the membrane is worn, a seal is leaking, or the TDS controller is letting too much raw water mix in. A bitter or odd taste more often points to a spent carbon filter or a mineral cartridge. None of these fix themselves, but most are quick to sort out.

Here are the five causes we find most often in Roorkee homes, and what to do about each.

A taste change is your purifier asking for a check.

5 reasons RO water tastes salty or bitter

  1. Worn membrane. As the membrane ages, more salt passes through and output TDS rises.
  2. TDS controller set too high. Many purifiers blend some raw water back in. If the valve is opened too far, RO water tastes salty.
  3. Leaking O-ring or bypass. A cracked seal lets raw water skip the membrane.

Two causes that change taste more than saltiness:

  1. Spent carbon post-filter, which leaves a flat, bitter or plastic taste.
  2. A new or worn mineral cartridge, which can taste slightly salty or metallic for a few days.

Check this first: a TDS reading

A cheap TDS meter tells you a lot. Test the tap water and the RO water. If the RO water is much closer to the tap water than it used to be, the membrane or a seal is the problem. If RO TDS is fine but the taste is still off, look at the carbon filter.

Also check whether your input water has changed. If you have moved to a borewell supply, or your area’s supply source changed, the same RO setting can give saltier water.

How each cause is fixed

A worn membrane is replaced; see RO membrane and filter replacement. A high TDS controller is turned back so the output sits in a sensible range for your water. Leaking seals are replaced, and a spent carbon filter is changed during a routine filter change.

If RO water tastes salty and you are not sure why, a technician can test all of these in one visit; see RO repair in Roorkee.

Is salty RO water safe to drink?

Slightly salty water is usually not dangerous, but it means the purifier is no longer doing its job fully, so harmful dissolved substances may also be getting through. Indian drinking water should meet the BIS IS 10500 standard. Get it checked rather than living with it.

RO water tastes salty: frequently asked questions

Why does my RO water taste salty all of a sudden?

A sudden change usually means a seal has failed, the TDS controller was moved, or your input water changed. A slow change over months points to a worn membrane.

Can a new filter make RO water taste strange?

Yes, a new carbon or mineral cartridge can taste odd for a few days. Flushing a few tanks of water usually clears it.

What TDS should RO water have?

For most homes, a moderate TDS is fine. Very low TDS tastes flat; very high TDS tastes salty. We set it based on your water.

Do you fix salty RO water in Roorkee?

Yes, usually the same day.
